AMUZ: Where the past breathes and the future unfurls

Tucked away in the heart of Antwerp, AMUZ glistens: a baroque gem with an age-old soul and a new sound. This is where we combine the timeless enchantment of classical music with the energy of today’s makers. Our story is one of visionary fervour and a passion for history, of pioneers and top talent, expertise and experimentation. For the past 20 years now, the former St. Augustine’s Church has been a gateway to heaven for those who dare to pause and prick up their ears. A promising sanctuary for those curious about classical music. A cabinet of curiosities for those who have unravelled all the secrets of the repertoire. An open house where the centuries flow effortlessly into each other. Welcome!

Note hunters, code crackers

No, we don’t serve fast food. AMUZ is a place of passion and creativity, where historically informed performance is no mere academic exercise but an exciting quest for the soul of music from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Just like all those odd rummagers in the early music movement, AMUZ digs down to the roots of great repertoire and forgotten masterpieces. Every programme is historically substantiated, thanks to the unique expertise of scientists and artists who decipher the codes of scores with the eagle eye of detectives and the precision of surgeons. Above all, every performance is a refreshing dive into the artistic flows of genius composers and musicians, past and present.

Back to the future

The swagger of our early days has made way for the insight that we are only at the beginning of an endlessly fascinating journey. AMUZ has its roots in the past and cherishes its local context, but it also sets its sights on the future and the world. That is why we are celebrating our 20th anniversary with iconic ensembles that navigate the limits of time, space and convention with as much gusto as we do: the interstellar vocal talent of Utopia Ensemble, VOCES8 and Stile Antico, as well as B’Rock Orchestra, which is bringing the festival atmosphere back to our stage precisely two decades after the opening day!

Sssssssssh… talent at work!

Kammenstraat is buzzing with talent. With the world-renowned festival Laus Polyphoniae enticing the big guns of the international early music scene to the city, the International Young Artists’ Presentation (IYAP) offers a platform for the new generation. From seasoned veterans to virtuosos still wet behind the ears, every voice gets the chance to shine at AMUZ in the acoustic luxury of our sublimely restored church. Even the very youngest visitors can immerse themselves in the world of classical music in Klankenbad. Streaming and algorithms? The live experience of pure musical skill: that is what revolutionary really means!

AMUZ isn’t just any concert hall. It is a crossroads where the centuries embrace, where sound history and the music of the future walk hand in hand, and the experience of pure mastery blurs all sense of time. To anyone who dares to listen and let go: step inside!
