Eight musicians assemble on a playing area at the center of the hall. Around them are cushions on which babies and toddlers await the concert anxiously. The music starts: sounds from 16th- and 17th-century Portugal reach the impressionable little ears, and a new world opens up. A first adventurous tot ventures among the musicians. Other toddlers follow or clap their hands! Perhaps one or the other will cry, classical music may not be up everybody’s alley after all, or is it nevertheless? While a little danseuse inspires the accordionist to a personal serenade, the saxophone player starts interactive playing with his infant spectators too. The Portuguese hit Concertos para Bebés has already been touring all over Europe and will pay a call on Antwerp for the first time this summer. Be sure to book your reservations early!

Contrapunctus is a vocal ensemble residing at the University of Oxford. They are famously known for their pioneering musicological research and their soul-stirring interpretations. This productive combination mostly results in felicitous concert programmes which immediately manage to capture the audience. During this concert Contrapunctus will bring some masterpieces from the 16th and 17th century, music written for royal occasions by composers such as Felipe de Magalhães, João Lourenço Rebelo, Fernando de Almeida en Aires Fernandez. The Portuguese repertoire has been the natural habitat for Contrapunctus ever since the foundation of its predecessor, the vocal ensemble A Capella Portuguesa. Conductor Owen Rees is an authority in the field of Portuguese music history. Together they are the perfect guide to accompany you on a voyage to the royal Portuguese chapel and the chapel of the dukes of Bragança.

The festival resident’s first concert takes its cue from the Habsburg court in the 17th century and combines music and poetry from Madrid to Lisbon from that era. You will hear works by maestro Mateo Romero, Juan Blas de Castro, Joan Pujol, Alvaro de los Rios and Manuel Machado on texts by Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza, Luis Vélez de Guevara, Luis de Góngora and Lope de Vega. Allow yourself to get steeped in the romances and seguidillas interpreted by the splendid voices of the artist in residence of Laus Polyphoniae 2011!

With dignity they express the omnipresent tears of Lisbon, a solitude that they manage to alleviate somewhat with their agile sounds.” Paul Van Nevel has been enthralled by Portugal and its authentic culture for quite some time already. Together with hostess Fien Sabbe he engages in conversations with guests such as Tessa de Loo, who lost their hart to Portugal as well. Steeped in the melancholy atmosphere of the ‘saudade’ we embark on a quest for the soul of Portugal, drinking in the poetry. Fado troubadour António Rocha proves a perfect soundtrack. (Dutch spoken)

Toch zijn gregoriaanse gezangen en polyfonie absoluut de moeite waard om te ontdekken en grondiger te leren kennen. De cursus Oude muziek voor beginners schetst de meest markante evoluties binnen de westerse muziekgeschiedenis en maakt u vertrouwd met enkele kernbegrippen uit de muziekleer. August De Groote en Simon Van Damme zijn beiden doctor in de musicologie. Met vaste hand gidsen zij u niet alleen door de leerstof, maar ook naar enkele concerten.

Deze cursus is toegankelijk voor iedereen die houdt van of nieuwsgierig is naar oude muziek. De cursusprijs omvat drie cursusdagen, koffie, syllabus, programmaboek en toegang tot vier concerten van Laus Polyphoniae 2011.
