A fierce dispute over French music raged in Paris around 1740: to what extent should traditional – Baroque – French music, brought to greatness by Jean-Baptiste Lully, admit foreign influences and tendencies, as was happening in the new music by Jean-Philippe Rameau? The main aspects of the clash between the two visions are described by the academic Louis Bollioud-Mermet (1709-1794) in his book De la corruption du goût dans la musique françoise (1746). Vestigium Ensemble has drawn inspiration from the disputes, finding music that reflects the contrasts between the new and old styles, ranging from Pierre Danican Philidor to Pierre-Evard Taillart.
