With the Carolingian long-necked lute, harp and citole – a stringed instrument shaped like a holly leaf – PER-SONAT echoes ancient history in timeless music. In Orpheus’ Echo, our journey through time takes us to the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries: a period stubbornly imprinted on our collective memory as the ‘Dark Ages’. But it was far from dark, this programme shows, linking the mythical world of Orpheus to the innovations of the Carolingian Renaissance. The hypnotising melodies of laments, poetic odes and pioneering organa from manuscripts such as the Winchester Troparium and Musica Enchiriadis shed new light on the period. For once and for all, let’s be done with the murky Middle Ages and bask in the dawn of a new era!
