Around 1300, a shift was occurring in the Western musical landscape. The monophonic singing tradition was coming under pressure from increasingly rich polyphony – but that didn’t mean that old repertoires and styles had disappeared for good. This field of tension is where Marc Mauillon and Les Trouveurs are in their element. The revelation of IYAP 2025, the young ensemble Les Trouveurs, is back on stage at AMUZ, this time with a programme that combines hymns of praise from the Cantigas de Santa Maria with rhythmically sophisticated motets, Italian ballate by Francesco Landini and refined troubadour songs by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. Mauillon, known for his intense interpretations of work by Guillaume de Machaut, proves once again how fresh and up-to-date this repertoire can sound. Three voices and no safety net: the Middle Ages on a knife edge.
