In Fortuyne, wat hebdy ghebrouwen, Les Âmes Perdues dive into the Antwerp Songbook, a collection of Antwerp folk songs published in 1544 by the Antwerp-based printer Jan Roelans: “Een schoon liedekens boeck inden welcken ghy vinden sult veelderhande liedekens oude en nyeuwe om droefheyt ende melancolie te verdrijuen.” (A beautiful book of songs in which you will find many different songs, old and new, to banish sadness and melancholy.)
Les Âmes Perdues trawled through this gigantic treasury of music in search of the minor characters in the history of Antwerp. Their search took them, as they put it, “through byssches and scrublande most various in their use, beanpoles laced with compounds strange, bear cubs clothed in leather and goose feathers, good musicke and pageboys a-suffring in pubertie’s throes.” In their non-conformist style, the three young performers of Les Âmes Perdues drag the Antwerp Songbook into the 21st century, peppering it with fun and mischief.
