Il Gardellino

Musicalisches Opfer

On 7 May 1747, Johann Sebastian Bach went to visit his son Carl Philipp Emanuel in Potsdam for a royal portion of chamber music. When Frederick II spotted them on the guest list, he cancelled the concert on the spot: he was far more eager to meet the living legend in person! He guided J.S. Bach over to his gleaming Silbermann fortepianos and asked him to improvise on a complex melody. Bach conjured a three-voice ricercar out of the ‘Thema Regium’ and promised to write six-voice variations as well. The result was the Musicalisches Opfer, a gift fit for a king consisting of 14 pieces and one of the most beautiful enigmas in music history. Il Gardellino opens the collection with the trio sonata for the flute, violin and basso continuo, giving a starring role to Jan De Winne and the traverso he copied from an original by J.J. Quantz.

This concert is part of Jan De Winne’s doctorate in the arts, En recherche du son perdu, about the current construction of ‘historical’ traverso flutes.
