The convex mirror in Jan Van Eyck’s portrait of the Arnolfini couple is not a visual gimmick, but rather a window into new dimensions of reality that first became visible on the eve of the Renaissance. The same happened with music in the 14th century, when composers pushed back the limits of the possible with their revolutionary techniques. By stacking up voices in countless new ways and inventing new forms of notation, they created an echo chamber where melodies endlessly reflected and distorted each other. This concert offers the listener the exceptional opportunity to get to know the next generation of the Huelgas Ensemble. Achim Schulz – a longtime singer of the ensemble – will guide through the wonderful world of Ars Nova. As the successor to Paul Van Nevel, he will seamlessly take over the baton step by step.
