The four singers of the ensemble Contre le Temps present early polyphony from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. Their programme illustrates how polyphonic music emerged from monophonic Gregorian plainchant by improvising new melodies on an existing Gregorian melody line. The four-part songs first heard at Notre-Dame in Paris in the 12th and 13th centuries were a new milestone in the evolution of Western music history. The four ladies of Contre le Temps look forward to taking you back to the roots.
