Carolus Luython (born in 1557/58) is returning to his native city of Antwerp especially for Laus Polyphoniae. His musical talent was discovered at a young age, and he was recruited by the Habsburgs as a promising youth. His career at the imperial courts in Vienna and Prague was exceptionally successful: his work was published in cities including Prague and Venice. He hardly ever returned to Antwerp. Now, however, Cappella Mariana & L’Achéron are bringing this ‘lost’ talent back to his native city at last.
The Book of Lamentations – with its poignant account of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem – has been set to music by several composers. Luython, one of the last representatives of the Franco-Flemish school, set it to masterly counterpoint. He coloured his polyphony with a few madrigalisms, in reference to the new style from Italy.
