As masons were raising Notre-Dame from the ground, musicians were creating a new architecture of sound. Like the church spires, the vocal constructions of visionary music builders soared upwards to unseen heights. Alla Francesca steps up to the mark with a vocal trio, vielle, Gothic harp and percussion for dancing motets, clever conducti, stately hymns and playful rondeaux that refuse to be held back by the limits of what was expected. With this generous selection of music from sources such as the Magnus liber organi, the ensemble offers a glimpse of 13th century Paris, where the din from the choir stalls was as loud as the hammers on the scaffolding.
