As an Antwerp-based vocal ensemble, Utopia explores the music of the city’s glory years in the 16th century. Following their projects on the Antwerp Kapellmeister Andreas Pevernage and motet images from Antwerp – which they performed at Laus Polyphoniae 2023 – the musicians have set their sights on Tielman Susato. Today, Susato is best known as a composer and the publisher of his instrumental ‘danserye’, but Utopia brings his forgotten vocal works back to life: five-part motets and chansons – including a ‘reponse’ to Josquin des Prez’ famous Mille regrets – and the five-part Missa In illo tempore. You will also hear works by Nicolas Gombert, Orlandus Lassus, Thomas Crecquillon and other composers.
This concert is also the presentation of Utopia’s new CD of this repertoire.
