Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed more than twenty piano concertos, but only two of them are in a minor key. Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, KV 491 is considered one of the most advanced works in the genre, deeply admired by Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. Mozart completed it in March 1786, shortly before the première of Le Nozze di Figaro. The two works stand side by side in the Köchel Verzeichnis, but they are totally different: the opera is jubilant, the concerto brooding. Concerto No. 21 in C major, KV 467 was written a year earlier, in March 1785. At that point, Mozart was in his early thirties and at the pinnacle of his powers. Between the two milestones of composition for the piano, Haydn hails the sunrise with his sparkling Symphony no. 6 ‘Le Matin’. These are canonical classics, in the excellent hands of the dream team Il Gardellino & Pashchenko: sparkling contrasts, brio without pretension and endless narrative power.
