In Mixed Style: Orchestral Music by Bach & Telemann

They are often mentioned in the same breath: Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. The two giants had a complex relationship that was both professional and personal. They cherished a deep admiration for each other, and were colleagues in Leipzig at one point, when Bach was the musical director and Telemann was the resident composer at St Nicholas and St Thomas Church. We have no surviving letters, but there are other traces of interactions between them, such as the arrangements they made of each other’s compositions. And then there is Carl Philipp Emanuel: Bach’s fifth child and Telemann’s godson. The EUBO weaves together the lives of these icons of the German Baroque with a generous sample of their orchestral music. With a sinfonia, concerto and suite, they serve up practically all the key genres. Baroque oboist Alfredo Bernardini leads this ceremonial parade in honour of two notoriously original thinkers.
