Six centuries old and still unrivalled: the motets by Philippe de Vitry (1291-1361). After years of research and experimentation, Ensemble Arborescence presents them in a sparklingly refreshing reading. Eight motets by the brilliant theoretician, poet and court composer are alternated with atmospheric interludes by David Chappuis: a glorious play of subtle consonance and daring dissonance as a reflection of rich mediaeval polyphony. The monumental Lugentium siccentur oculi – a gift from Vitry to Pope Clement VI – is both the crowning glory of the concert and the first time this piece will be heard as it sounded (or may have sounded) in its own day!
