Cathedral of Sound

Paris, 1163. As cathedral builders challenge the laws of gravity, composers defy musical conventions. A new generation pull out all the stops: Notre-Dame is the place where the first three-voiced compositions in history sing out, the earliest forebears of the rondeau, as Gregorian melodies are enlaced with new voices to spectacular effect. Their repertoire is as daring as it is diverse, ranging from heavenly songs to the Virgin Mary to heartrending Passion music, and from exuberant songs of praise to scathing criticism of corruption in the Church. Memor pays tribute to these dreamers of a new musical architecture in a programme that seeks out the boundaries between liturgy and entertainment, devotion and liberation, earthly reality and panoramas of heaven.
