Stile Antico

In a strange Land. Elizabethan Composers in exile

Catholics had a hard time under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the daughter of King Henry VIII, who founded the Anglican Church. Many Catholic composers, including Peter Philips, Richard Dering and John Dowland, decided to play it safe and leave the country. Others, such as William Byrd and Robert White, stayed faithful to their homeland. They expressed their inner, spiritual exile with divine spiritual music. Stile Antico is the perfect ensemble to perform this powerful and imaginative music, such as White’s restrained Lamentations.
