Giesta presents a program structured around the places where the well-known pilgrimage Camino de Santiago passes by. The departing point is the codex Calixtinus, the first source where the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela was described and also an important source of music from the 12th century. Giesta has selected sacred and secular vocal pieces, repertoire around the devotion of the Virgin Mary and traditional music sung during romerias, shorter pilgrimages that happened throughout the Iberian Peninsula. The ensemble Giesta focuses on the overlap between early western notated music and oral traditions of Mediterranean countries, using their voices, recorders and traditional percussion as tools to transform and reinvent these repertoires.
On the special occasion of performing the program El camino se hace cantando, Giesta is joined by David Mackor, lutenist and singer from The Netherlands.
