Lecture by Jennifer Bloxam: Obrecht

Jacob Obrecht: Missa Sub tuum praesidium

A lecture by M. Jennifer Bloxam on Jacob Obrecht and his Missa Sub tuum praesidium before the concert by Cappella Pratensis & I Fedeli. Her talk will explore the Antwerp origins of this mass, its connection to the city’s opulent August celebration of the Feast of the Assumption (for the Blessed Virgin), and its surprising use as an Easter mass for the Emperor Maximilian I. Musicologist M. Jennifer Bloxam is the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Music Emerita at Williams College (USA) and past president of the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music. Her research focuses mainly on early music in its cultural context and the relationship between music and spirituality. She enjoys an ongoing collaboration with the Dutch vocal ensemble Cappella Pratensis to create film, recording, website and concert projects dedicated to the contextualisation of this music. Jennifer Bloxam is a popular guest speaker at Laus Polyphoniae, where she has given several lectures in the past.

Prof. Bloxam will speak in English.
